It’s now been 3 days of RVmooning but it feels like it’s been 2 weeks and we’re already halfway across the country (about 1500 miles)!
It stopped raining just in time for us to pull into our campsite at Mammoth Cave Campground. Chris only had to drive around the campground circle 3 times before he figured out how to pull into our site. We very quickly realized how awesome it is to not have to set up camp (in the dark too) as we simply walked from the car into our trailer, opened a bottle of wine (and whiskey compliments of Dr. Moyer), ate a pound of cheese, and then hit the sack.
Thursday morning, we bought tickets for the Grand Avenue tour which was a 4-hour hike through Mammoth Cave. Despite Chris’ complaints about how slow everyone was in our tour group and annoyed that they didn’t offer self-guided hikes through the caves as well as my desperate need for a bathroom, it was pretty cool to see life 300 feet underground and to witness the world’s longest cave system. We were also inspired to return some day to do the Wild Cave Tour which is a 6-hour hike crawling and climbing through the caves. (Note: You have to be under 42 inches wide in order to do this tour!) Here are a few pics from inside the cave:
Upon returning to the surface, we grabbed a quick bite to go at the Mammoth Cave Lodge and started the next leg of our journey to St. Louis. We made it about 5 minutes down the road and then we got lost because Chris was driving without GPS (no service). To make things even more interesting, while I was trying to look at a REAL map to figure out where we were, he decided to open MY Dr. Pepper for a drink and it exploded all over him, me, the car, and the map. You know what they say about Karma… So great start! We switched drivers and 4.5 hours later, I had us checking in to St. Louis RV park with no problems.
We quickly discovered the RV park was not necessarily in the nicest part of the city… however, we were reassured by the nice couple who owned the place that things there would be well taken care of so we set off in search of a Bird scooter to scoot downtown to get some night photography shots of the Gateway Arch. This was Chris’ first experience on a city scooter and it is now his new favorite activity. If you’re not familiar with Bird scooters… look it up.
As seems to be the trend for us, it was later than we expected by the time we finished photography shots and got dressed to go out, so we were looking for dinner at 11:15pm. Of course, I insisted on waiting in line for the elevator to check out the 360 rooftop lounge which also happens to be the place that stops serving food at 11pm. Needless to say, the place had incredible views (see below) so we decided on drinks for dinner and then got pizza at 1am.
The next morning, we decided it was finally time for us to shower on this trip. Feeling fresh, we made our way back downtown for breakfast and to check out the Gateway Arch Museum. We had a nice meal at a place called Rooster although Chris is still getting used to the “slower pace” of the South. 🙂
After breakfast, we grabbed scooters again to head to the museum. Unfortunately, the earliest tour time to go up in the arch would cause us to be late for our check-out time for the RV park so we settled for exploring the museum downstairs which was pretty cool. Chris said it was the most futuristic national park he’s ever been to! I never thought I would find myself saying I want to go back and spend more time at a museum but here we are. I guess I really am an adult.
We made it out of St. Louis just in time to get hit by severe weather of hail and 60mph wind gusts which pretty much made me poop my pants while driving a trailer. The rain lasted for about 3 hours and then the sun finally came out when Chris decided it was his turn to drive. Currently, we are in Kansas, stopping to sleep in about an hour and a half and then have another full day of driving tomorrow to get to Great Sand Dunes National Park, CO! That’s all for now folks – over and out.
